What methods of tattoo removal are used ?

The following methods of tattoo removal are currently used. They have varying degrees of cost, invasiveness, and success.

1. Laser Tattoo Removal

This is considered one of the best methods of tattoo removal today. The Q-Switched Ruby, Q-Switched Alexandrite, and Q-Switched Nd lasers are commonly employed. This process is relatively painless. The sensation felt from the laser has been compared to that of being snapped with a rubber band. In most cases, and special cream is applied to the skin to numb this sensation. The laser is effective, because it breaks down the pigment in the tattoo, allowing the body to absorb and dispose of the pigments. Each case is fact dependant, but you should expect to undergo multiple laser treatments.

2. Excision

Excision is probably the most effective method of tattoo removal, if the tattoo in question is small. The process of excision involves numbing the entire area with a local anesthetic. The pigmented skin is then surgically removed. The edges are then drawn together and sutured. Larger tattoos are more difficult to remove with this method, and must be done in stages over a longer period of time. It may even be necessary to take skin grafts from another part of the body when dealing with larger tattoos.

3. Tattoo Removal Creams

Tattoo Removal Creams are a popular option because of their non-invasive nature. These creams work by penetrating the skin to break down the pigments. These creams work over a period of 2 - 9 months typically, depending upon the type and color of inks used, and the depth of ink penatration. It is typically applied twice daily. They are not recommeded for use around the mouth, eyes, or sensitive areas of the body such as the genital area. The process is normally pain-free, but may be accompanied with tingling or a mild burning sensation. There is no scarring involved with the use of tattoo removal creams, which is a definite plus over the other methods available. With this method, the tattoo typically just fades away over time. We did a lot of research on various tattoo removal creams, and found numerous customer testimonials praising their effectiveness.

4. Dermabrasion

This procedure is normally performed under local anesthetic or local and oral/IV sedation. The process of dermabrasion involves spraying the tattooed skin with a solution that freezes the area. An abrasive, rotary device is then used to "sand" the area and peel the skin. This typically results in bleeding, and the area is immediately bandaged. This method typically results in scarring. This method is typically used only for smaller tattoo removal due to the bleeding and bandaging required.

5. Salabrasion

Salabrasion is probably one of the oldest tattoo removal techniques. It is sometimes still used by some physicians, but has mostly fallen by the wayside in favor of the newer tattoo removal methods. With this technique, a local anesthetic is used on the affected area, and it is essentially vigorously rubbed with salt to abrade the tattooed area. When the skin turns to a deep red color from the abrasion, a dressing is applied.
