Tattoo Removal Physicians

How does Laser Tattoo Removal work ?

Laser tattoo removal is considered by many physicians to be the best technology available today for tattoo removal. There are typically three types of lasers that can be used for this procedure. They are the Q-Switched Ruby, Q-Switched Alexandrite, and Q-Switched Nd lasers. The sensation from the laser has been compared to that of being snapped with a rubber band. So a numbing cream will normally be applied to the skin prior to the procedure. This topical anesthetic is optional though.

The physician will direct pulses of light from the laser directly onto the tattooed areas of the skin. The penetration of the laser light breaks up the ink particles, and allows the body to naturally dispose of the pigments. The surrounding skin is not damaged by the laser. This procedure works best on parts of the body where there is good circulation, such as arms, chest, and buttocks. Areas with poor circulation, such as fingers and ankles, are more difficult to treat with this method. The lasers work best on dark colored inks, because the dark pigments absorb more of the laser pulses.

Laser tattoo removal requires many treatments. Each case is different, and there are many determining factors on how long removal will take. Some tattoos by amateur tattoo artists only require 1 - 4 treatments scheduled approximately 1 - 2 months apart. Tattoos that were done by professional tattoo artists are typically deeper and more dense. In the case of a professional tattoo, there may be 6 - 10 treatments required, scheduled approximately 2 months apart.

Cost is a major determining factor with laser tattoo removal. Many physicians are hesitant to quote prices without first seeing the tattoo to be removed. One physician that we spoke with stated that the price per treatment could range from $250 to as much as $850. That is a pretty big range, but there are many variables that can play a factor in the final price. We recommend that you price shop, ask questions, and do some price comparison. We did locate some companies online that quoted prices on a per square inch basis as well.
